Fresh water prawn trap is operated in river bank or leasable
areas. There are many different shapes of prawn traps. Generally the length of the traps is
50 cm to 65 cm in length and 30 cm to 60 cm in diameter. The entrance in shaped like a funnel, made of bamboo
sticks, 20 cm to 30 cm in length. Some traps have a second entrance for the purpose of confining
the prawn and preventing their escape. Coconut meat has traditionally been the most popular bait used in
the trap before being set. The prawn trap is operated in river with a good current in a depth of between
0.5 m to 2 m mainly during the rainy season. The gear is used in the flooded areas, river and lakes preferably
near inundated forest where there is some
current. The trap is installed in carefully selected spots
with the entry facing downstream. They are generally left there until water level changes require the traps to
be relocated. Usually, they are harvested once a day.
