1.
Inlay Basket
Inlay basket
is made of bamboo, and somehow it is a kind of bigger plunge
basket. The height is about 2.5 meter, and the mouth at the bottom has a diameter
of about 1.3 meter. It is covered with a net of 20 mm mesh size. The lead rings are fixed on the net at
about 1.7 meter from the bottom of the basket. The upper most of the net is hung on top of the basket frame
with a running knot. The fisherman in the boat has to look for the air bubbles to come up on to the surface
of the water. As soon as the air bubbles appear above the water surface, the fisherman quickly drops down
the basket right on to the spot where the bubbles come up. Then, from mouth of basket at the top,
fisherman thrusts a spear into it in order to scare the fish. Just as fisherman feels through the sense that
the fish is struggling in the net, the fisherman suddenly unfastens the running knot. The result is that the fish
gets entangled in the net just like the cast net.

2. Cover
Pot or Plunge Basket

The Cover pot is like
a conical basket usually made of bamboo, with an opening for
inserting the hand and arm at the top and opens at the bottom. The size of
the basket is about 0.5 meter height and mouth of the bottom has 0.4 – 0.5 meter in diameter. The
interior diameter of the upper opening varies between 12 and 15 cm. The basket is plunged to the bottom of
shallow water. Such as in rice field and the hand is inserted through the top to check for any trapped fish.
Basket may be used by women, men and children. |
3. Plunge
Basket with Tamarind Wood Scared Line

This gear is combination of two fishing techniques. The tamarind
scared line is used to drag mud bottom and plunge basket is to catch fishes same as cover pot.
So, this is basically a mechanical frighteningand collecting device. In terms
of its operation it is a dragged gear. The line consists of
about 100 tamarind wooden sticks (150 mm long and of 25 mm in diameter), linked
by a PE rope 1.5 – 2 mm diameter forming sort of a chain. The wooden elements are carved from a hard
and heavy wood. The 25-30 meter long wooden chain has a 10 meter long rope at each end for pulling
the wooden chain. At the middle of the wooden chain, there are big float attached with the rope. The
float is showing where the wooden chain in the bottom. It was used in lake and leasable inn with water
depth of about 2 – 2.5 meter. Normally this kind of fishing method needs three boats. Two boats, one at each
side, used to haul the wooden chain through waters or watery mud. The fisherman with basket in the middle
boat has to watch the air bubbles to come up on to the surface of the water. As soon as the air bubbles
appear above the water surface, the fisherman quickly drive down into the water and the basket right on to
the spot where the bubble come up. Then, from mouth of basket at the top, fisherman capture the fish
by hand. |
