Anchovy encircling seine (Khmer name Uon Ka Koeum)
This
gear was just introduced to Cambodian waters in the 1960s. It is designed
to catch anchovy during the daytime. It means that this fishing gear does
not only catch anchovy, but a mixture of species. The most important target
species is anchovy that constitutes nearly 70 to 90 % of the total catch.
This gear has been used almost exclusively by the fishermen who live in Sihanoukville
and Koh Kong (Tab. 11). This fishing gear has a small mesh size as mosquito
net and it is operated when fishermen see a school of anchovies.
So far this fishing gear has almost
disappeared from Cambodian waters because of the degradation of the natural
resources and also disturbance from pair-trawlers and light-luring purse seine
in the offshore waters of Cambodia. The fishermen who use this type of fishing
gear have changed to other fishing gears or combine with other fishing gears
as shrimp, crab or fish gill net.
