Mackerel gill net (Khmer name Mong Trey Kamong)
This
fishing gear is specifically designed. It is used to catch pelagic fish especially
mackerel, which comprises more than 80-90 % of the total catch. According
to Cambodia's Fisheries Law (Khmer called Kret Chhbab Lek 33 Kra. Chor), which
was signed and came into force on 09th March 1987, Article 27 mackerel fishing
is prohibited every year from 15 January to 31 March because this is the spawning
period for mackerel. In Cambodia, one fisherman has at least two types of
the fishing gears, so they can change to another fishery during the closed
season. This fishing gear is used only the fishermen who live in Sihanoukville
municipality and Koh Kong province (Tab. 10).
