DEEP-SEA FISHERY RESOURCES EXPLORATION

on the Continental Shelfs and Slopes in the Southeast Asian Waters

In the Southeast Asian Waters more than 50% of the sea areas are deep sea whereas utilization of those resources has not been initiated yet. This is due to the lack of information on how potential of the resources. In addition, there are not many research vessels in the region can conduct the deep-sea survey due to lack of facilities such as appropriate fishing gears for fish sampling, scientific instruments and expertise.

More over, with the view of international concerns on the ecosystem approach for the deep-sea fisheries, therefore exploration of the deep-sea resources through this program are need for further consideration and sustainable management.

Objectives

1. To investigate the deep-sea fishery resources in collaboration with SEAFDEC member countries using M.V. SEAFDEC 2 and national research vessels

2. To investigate the impact of deep-sea trawl to bottom ecosystem

3. To enhance human resources capacity on the deep-sea resources exploration
