Since 2008, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) has started to produce the “Fishery Statistical Bulletin of Southeast Asia”. SEAFDEC deemed it necessary to intensify its assistance to the countries in the Southeast Asian region in improving the compilation of their respective national fishery statistical systems which are used to compile the regional fishery statistics considering the new geo-political set-up of the ASEAN, the changing situation of the region's fisheries as well as the differences in the current national statistical systems. To focus on the basic requirements that can be possibly achieved by the countries in the region without putting much burden on the agencies responsible for the collection and compilation of fishery statistics, we have uploaded in the new website information that contain the minimum requirements for the compilation of fishery statistics. We hope that such information could give many benefits to the ASEAN member countries. Moreover, SEAFDEC also envisaged that the harmonized and standardized definitions and classifications reflecting the multi-species/gear nature of the tropical fisheries of Southeast Asia could facilitate the sharing of fishery statistics and information in the region. It should be emphasized that the accuracy and reliability of the regional aggregation of fisheries statistics would ultimately depend upon the reliability of the national data sources, collection, methods, periodicity in up-dating, and reporting.
