"Training Workshop on Research Methodologies for the Study on Impact of Fishing to Deep-Sea Ecosystem"

The workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam and SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) from 16 to 20 October 2010 onboard the research vessel M.V. SEAFDEC 2.

The workshop was officially opened on October 16, 2010 at SEAMEO VOCTECH, Gadong, Brunei Darussalam. The participants and resource person attended in the workshop were including the researchers, scientiest/specialists in the field of marine ecology/biology and fishing gears from the SEAFDEC Member Countries; retired senior researcher from Seikai National Fisheries research Institute, Fisheries Research Agency of Japan, SEAFDEC Training Department, as well as instructors from Kasetsart University and Burapha University of Thailand.

All participants were onboard M.V. SEAFDEC 2 from 17 to 19 October 2010. Four topographic surveys using hydro-acoustic echo sounder and four fishing operations consisting of 1 beam trawl operation, 2 Agassiz trawl operations, and 1 deep-sea trap, were conducted in the continental slope areas off-Brunei Darussalam Waters (zone 3 and 4) at two main depth strata of 100-200m and 200-300m. Each fishing station was recorded in three stages procedures namely setting, dragging and hauling of the fishing gears used.

All participants were divided into four groups and rotated for sorting, identification, tagging, and preserving specimens under the supervision resource persons. Four main groups of benthic fauna composed of fishes, crustaceans, mollusk, and other invertebrates were sorted and preliminary identified and photographed prior to labeling tags to specimens, counting the number, and recording weight, respectively.

Results of the survey were divided and presented by participants from four different groups/fishing operations. Species identification was not completed onboard and bring back to laboratory for further study on the detailed taxonomy.
