CAPTURE FISHERY TECHNOLOGY : Information Collection for Economically Important Species as Surimi Material in Southeast Asian Region

According to rapid growth of surimi industry in Southeast Asian countries, as well as depletion of fisheries resources especially demersal resources, reduction of raw materials may impact to the demand of surimi producers. Therefore under the Asian-SEAFDEC program SEAFDEC/TD proposed to conduct the information collection of economically important species as surimi raw materials in the Southeast Asian Region. This Project was funded by the Japanese Trust Fund, in collaboration with relevant SEAFDEC Department, including Marine Fisheries Research Development and Management Department (MFRDMD) and Marine Fisheries Research Department (MFRD).

Objective :

The main aim of this project is to evaluate the present status and production trend of Threadfin bream in the Southeast Asian Region. In addition, reviewing and investigating for Threadfin bream species in the new fishing ground such as un-trawlable grounds and on continental shelf slope are also focused.

1)	To review the total catch/production of Threadfin bream, species composition and identification of their fishing ground in the Southeast Asian countries.
2)	To evaluate the present resources condition and trend of Threadfin bream resources found in the region in relationship with the situation of their fisheries (fishing gear types and fishery regulation)
3)	To clarify the market demand and distribution channel in the member countries and in Southeast Asia.
4)	To examine the production potential in the present situation and,
5)	To investigate other fishing grounds (such as un-trawlable grounds and continental shelf slopes areas) of threadfin bream and their catch potential.

2006

In 2006, major activities of this Project included information collection on: raw materials supplied to surimi manufactures; surimi productions; catch information of the species concerned. Such information has been collected through the technical consultation/meeting and visit to surimi manufactures in the SEAFDEC Member Countries, including Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam. In addition, consultation visit to landing site and surimi plant and resource survey by MV.SEAFDEC2 to Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam were also conducted.
